Chad Ramey won the windswept Corales Puntacana Championship on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title, beating Ben Martin and Alex Smalley by a stroke.
Emotional Martin ‘stung’ after coming up short
Ramey, 26, closed with a 5-under 67 in windy conditions at Corales Golf Club for a 18-under 270 total. The former University of Georgia player earned his PGA Tour card last year with a 19th-place finish on the developmental circuit’s regular-season money list.
He birdied three of the first four holes, made a 20-foot eagle putt on the par-5 12th and holed a 12-foot birdie putt on the 16th. After a bogey on the 17th, he salvaged par with a 7-footer on 18.
“I’m kind of in shock right now,” Ramey said. “I don’t really know what to say. I’m just very thankful and blessed to be in this position.”

Emotional Martin ‘stung’ after failing
Alex Smalley birdied the final three holes for a 67 to join Martin (69) at 17 under.
Martin was trying to become the first player to wire-to-wire on the PGA Tour since Henrik Stenson won the 2016 British Open. He opened with 63-65-67 to take a four-stroke lead into the final round.
“It stings right now,” Martin said. “I was trying to do something special, and I had it in my hands. I just didn’t finish it off.”
Rookie Lanto Griffin had a 63 to tie for fourth at 16 under with Anirban Lahiri (68), Ryan Armour (68) and Denny McCarthy (69).
“I’m just really proud of the way I hung in there,” Ramey said. “I gave myself a lot of opportunities, and fortunately enough, they started falling.”
Ramey won $ 540,000 to jump from 24th to second on the season money list with $2,052,293. He also earned a spot in next week’s Players Championship and a two-year PGA Tour exemption.
“This is something I’ve dreamed of my entire life,” Ramey said. “To be able to say that I’m a PGA Tour winner is special.”
